Sticky Fingers Simmons Model

Before closing the shaping studio at my old location, I finally found some time to make myself a little treat.    This is a new Simmons template that I am trying out, and instead of the usual twin keel set-up, I experimented a bit and this baby is set up with quads from Lok-box to take advantage of some seriously sick fins sets (eg. woody Twin Keels double foiled, Pavel Speed-Dialers, and the seriously wicked 757 set).    My usual S-deck, belly nose hull, and rocket booster tail concave.   Custom Resin Swirl, pin-lines, gloss and polish, and all that other good stuff.

Spreading the Love

2012 New Years Resolution for Everyone - Shape Your Own Board

2011 was a great year for interest in clients shaping their own surfboards.    I find it especially rewarding to pass along what meager knowledge I have attained throughout my own shaping experiences.    There is something very fulfilling about shaping and surfing on something that you yourself have created.  I encourage anyone and everyone to give it a try sometime.   You may only make one board or you may succumb to the power of the planer and take it on as a hobby or job.  Either way it will give you an deaper appreciation for the art and what you are riding on and get you thinking  a little bit about your plank.

Here is a pick that "DB" just sent me of his first attempt at shaping.    Nice rail band buddy.   Keep it up!

New Design - 6'2" Chimp Spanner

This is a new model that I am working on.   It's called the "Chimp Spanner" and is designed to be a quiver killer if there ever was one.   This particular board is 6'2" x 20 1/2" x 2 1/2", EPS/EPOXY with the "Flex Tail" upgrade (ie. stringerless from the fins back).    The board has a fuller fishy nose outline and relaxed rocker to get up to speed and planning quickly, but pulls in at the tail into a single bump round tail for added manouverability.  The board also features a elevated wing (e-wing) to bring the turn radius down a hair.     The ever popular 5/4/3 fin option also featured on this one.

New Model - "Snowtorch" Prototype Shortboard For Sale

This is a new model called the "Snowtorch".   I have tried to take a traditional shortboard design and adapt it for our typical fresh water conditions.   It was designed for the more accomplished surfer looking to melt the winter waves.    More of a relaxed entry rocker, significantly more foam throughout the chest and nose area, and wider than a traditional thruster.   Single to double concave to slight vee off the tail.

This was very much a prototype board allowing me to try some new stuff:
1) flex tail blank in which the stringer is absent in the tail of the board to allow for increased flex and     rebound out of the turn
2) Intricate tape pattern for foam stain/swirl
3) Rail cancer carbon/polypropylene patches

I am really happy with how these flextail blanks have come out, but real world performance will give the final verdict.   The custom graphic/tape job did bleed in some locations (see pic below), so another lesson learned and room for improvement.   Leash protection patches are probably not worth the hassle, but an option that could be added to the custom option list.

Tapped Off-1

Airbrush, foam stains and solid resin tints are much more of a challenge on EPS foam.   Playing around with some foam swirling and airbrush combo and fancy tape work.   Still had some bleed through, so not a perfect experiment this time around but still a cool effect and another lesson learned.
Look closely and you might see something odd with this blank.  Can you tell what it is?

Black Swan - Retrospective II

These pics were taking near the end of the foam shaping process.   Ed and I decided to change the flat spot in the deck/nose area.  We rounded out that region to increase the strength of the boat and  decrease the amount of water load-up that happens when paddling out and through waves.    I have kept considerable foot volume and tried to keep the knee pockets high and far enough to the sides that it should be a good cross-over from whitewater paddling ergonomics.    Can't see the hull features in the pictures but feature a slight displacement nose, transitioning into strong double-barrel concave and quad runner channels all shaped into a moderate Vee with an e-wing at the flight.  Very little tail rocker for max speed.     Very much based on a bonzer hull.   Will be very interesting to see how she flies.  Had great input from Greg Webber (Webber Surfboards in Australia) and Tim Stafford (English shaper and Bonzer expert).

Black Swan - Retrospective Part 1

After design of the Black Swan surf kayak on BoardCAD, the next step was to hot-wire the rocker and deck profile, followed by the outline template from a large EPS billet.

Genetically Modified Organism

Being the mad molecular biologist that I am, we have injected some Willer Surfcraft DNA into this new little (5'4") groveller called "The Humpty".    I am not ashamed to say that the parental DNA is derived from Firewires' hot Sweet Potato board.   What the customer wants is what the customer gets.   Sick double barrel concave, nominal nose rocker, flat deck and performance rails.
Will fly in the smallest of surf.
